Roopkund Trek Overview

The Roopkund Trek is one of the most iconic high-altitude trekking experiences in Uttarakhand, taking you through dense oak and rhododendron forests, vast alpine meadows, rugged mountain terrain, and snow-covered landscapes. The trail combines natural beauty, challenging climbs, and the mystery surrounding the famous Roopkund Lake.

The journey begins around the Lohajung–Wan region before entering the forests of Ghairoli Patal and opening into the spectacular Ali and Bedni Bugyals. These expansive high-altitude meadows offer magnificent views of peaks such as Mt. Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.

As the trail climbs higher, the landscape transforms from green meadows to rocky and snow-covered terrain. Camps around Patar Nachauni and Bhagwabasa prepare trekkers for the demanding high-altitude section leading towards Roopkund. The final approach is a challenging climb, with the route reaching roughly 15,750 ft around the Roopkund–Junargali section.

The highlight of the journey is Roopkund Lake, popularly known as the Skeleton Lake, famous for the ancient human skeletal remains discovered around its shores. Beyond its mystery, the lake is surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks and rugged alpine landscapes, making the entire journey an unforgettable adventure.
