Leh, LadakhSham Valley Trek
The Sham Valley Trek is a beautiful short-distance Himalayan journey through the traditional landscapes of Ladakh. Often referred to as the “Baby Trek of Ladakh,” this route offers a comparatively gentle introduction to high-altitude trekking while combining dramatic mountain scenery with the culture and everyday life of remote Ladakhi villages.
The classic trail begins around Likir and continues through picturesque villages such as Yangthang, Hemis Shukpachan, Ang and Temisgam. Along the way, trekkers cross scenic mountain passes including Phobe La, Chagatse La, Tsermangchen La and Mebtak La, with the exact route and pass heights varying slightly between itineraries.
Unlike many of Ladakh's demanding high-altitude treks, Sham Valley stays at comparatively moderate elevations, with commonly used routes reaching around 3,700–3,900 metres. The trail features gradual climbs, rocky mountain paths, dry valleys and open ridges, making it suitable for trekkers seeking a shorter Himalayan adventure.
One of the most memorable aspects of the trek is the contrast between the barren Ladakhi mountains and the green village settlements. Willow trees, barley fields, streams and apricot orchards appear around traditional villages, creating striking pockets of greenery within the arid landscape.
The journey also provides opportunities to experience Ladakh's Buddhist heritage, with places such as Likir Monastery and the Ridzong Monastery located along or near commonly used routes. Traditional village homestays are another important part of the experience, allowing trekkers to experience local hospitality and Ladakhi culture more closely.
With manageable walking distances, scenic passes, ancient monasteries and authentic village experiences, the Sham Valley Trek is an excellent way to explore the quieter side of Ladakh on foot.
