Satopanth Lake Trek

The Satopanth Lake Trek is a challenging high-altitude adventure into the remote landscapes of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand. Starting from the Badrinath–Mana region, the trail follows the upper Alaknanda Valley through dramatic mountain scenery, alpine meadows, birch forests, glacial moraines and rugged Himalayan terrain before reaching the sacred Satopanth Lake.

The journey begins around Badrinath and Mana Village, one of the key access points for the trek. From Mana, the trail passes landmarks such as Vasudhara Falls before entering the alpine surroundings of Lakshmi Van, known for its Bhojpatra birch trees.

As the trail gains altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged. The route towards Chakratirtha passes through alpine terrain, rocky sections and moraine fields, with spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges.

The ultimate destination is Satopanth Lake, a striking triangular glacial lake situated at approximately 4,600 metres (15,100 ft). The lake is considered sacred and holds an important place in local Hindu traditions, with its three corners traditionally associated with Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva).

The surroundings offer impressive mountain views, including Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Swargarohini and Balakun, depending on weather and visibility. The combination of spiritual significance, remote wilderness and demanding high-altitude terrain makes Satopanth Lake a distinctive Himalayan trekking experience.
