Shumga Top Trek

The Shumga Top Trek is a beautiful Himalayan adventure in Himachal Pradesh, situated in the scenic Kullu region near the Great Himalayan National Park. This lesser-explored trek takes you through dense forests, expansive alpine meadows, traditional mountain villages and breathtaking high-altitude landscapes.

Starting from Shangarh, the journey introduces trekkers to the peaceful beauty of the Sainj Valley. The route passes through pine, cedar and rhododendron forests before reaching the serene surroundings of Sara Lake, a sacred alpine waterbody nestled within the mountains.

The highlight of the trek is the climb to Shumga Top, which reaches approximately 3,810 metres (12,500 ft). The summit lies along a ridge separating the Sainj and Tirthan valleys, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges and distant mountain regions.

As the trail climbs above the tree line, the landscape opens into wide alpine meadows. These high-altitude grasslands provide an opportunity to observe the changing vegetation of the Himalayas and, depending on conditions, spot wildlife such as the Himalayan monal and other mountain birds.

The summit area is also associated with a Jogni deity shrine and prayer flags, reflecting the cultural and spiritual traditions connected to the mountain landscape. From the top, clear-weather views may extend towards parts of the Kullu region, Kinnaur and Spiti, along with surrounding Himalayan peaks.

With forest trails, a peaceful alpine lake, open meadows and a rewarding summit climb, the Shumga Top Trek offers a combination of nature, adventure and mountain culture for trekkers looking to explore a quieter Himalayan route.
